It is easy to underestimate the growth potential of edge computing in this industry. Traditional infrastructure worth hundreds of thousands of miles can be modernized, and many new construction projects will implement the latest technology to ensure safe product delivery for an industry subject to fair scrutiny.

In the past decade, German factories such as the luxury car manufacturer Audi have been pushing its world-renowned manufacturing industry to a new level through computerization. This strategy, called "Industry 4.0" by the German government, has been adopted globally, and many industries have adopted its four principles: creating interconnected machines, achieving information transparency, giving machines autonomous decision-making power, and creating technology to provide humans. Medical sensors, electronic health records, and digital imaging systems are pushing large amounts of data to the cloud, where high-resolution images increase the cost of cloud storage through performances and consume bandwidth in the process. Large hospitals running hundreds of thousands of sensors will better follow the Audi model and save this data at home.

A healthcare provider partnered with Red Hat to create a real-time sepsis diagnosis solution powered by edge computing. The traditional diagnosis of sepsis takes up precious time, because the charts need to be manually reviewed, and the condition will deteriorate significantly hour by hour. By creating a distributed network of medical sensors, diagnostic tools, and edge data processing, the provider was able to detect sepsis nearly a day earlier than traditional methods, saving an estimated 8,000 lives so far. This model and other similar models will be applied in innovative ways in hospitals across the country to save more lives.

Military forces fighting in remote theaters may not have the luxury or even the desire to exchange data with the cloud. Edge networks from operators or frontier operational bases are bringing enhanced data security and availability to soldiers in the fog of war. Weather changes, mechanical failures, and actionable intelligence can now be quickly assessed, communicated and acted upon. The US military is also adopting edge computing at home in response to a pandemic that drives employees out of the office and disperses computing needs.

The future expenditure is clear. Computers are running more complex calculations, sending more data, and often sending transient data that does not require cloud storage. Devices are becoming more and more intelligent, and more and more. Companies and consumers want fast, reliable, and secure access to their data. Edge computing meets these growing demands and will grow accordingly.
